I tried fitting in...
Since a very young age, I've always felt like I wasn't able to be my authentic self. Searching for acceptance I would fashion myself in a way that I thought would make me acceptable to those around me. I'd change my appearance, the way I talked, and even my personal views to fit a mold that would make me likable, keeping my true thoughts and feelings hidden from the closest of my relationships.
I lost myself...
No one really knew who I was. I remember a friend of mine at the time saying, "I know you, but I don't know you, you know what I mean"? Yeah, I knew what he meant. Part of the problem was that I didn't know who I was. I had lost myself to what I thought others wanted to see. I was scared to embrace who I was and scared to share the real me with others. Would they still embrace and accept me for me? Would they still like me? I don't even know if I like me.
It was through my imagination that I found an outlet. I drew pictures, composed songs, created stories, and wrote poems. I even wrote and directed my own play. It gave me an outlet to be true to who I really was. I could be daring and break all the rules, I could even color outside of the lines if I wanted to. It was therapeutic, healing, and freeing all at the same time.
It's been a long journey of self-discovery and acceptance, but over the years I finally learned to embrace who I am.
